CETMAR and Matís set the pathway for an alliance to lead seafood innovation

Vigo, 11th September de 2015. Matís CEO Sveinn Margeirsson met yesterday with CETMAR Foundation management in Vigo. Both centres have worked together in several European research projects, as EcoFishMan, Mareframe, or PrimeFish. This meeting has helped them to establish ways of collaboration with the Galicia marine sector, to find common fields of interest and to build the foundations of future common projects.

The visit also included an event among Matís CEO, the team of Fisheries Socioeconomic Departament of CETMAR, including its department head, Rosa Chapela, and representatives of Galician fisheries and aquaculture sectors, as director of Galician Aquaculture Formation Institute, José Luis Villanueva, manager of the Spanish Association of Cod Fishing Ship Owners (AGARBA), Iván López, the director of Campus do Mar, Emilio Fernández, and CONXEMAR Association representative, Belén Vallina. Participants shared experiences and insights about industry and scientific role in marine research. One of the issues in the agenda was the Matís plan to set an internship program for students and young professionals. Building on horizon scanning and strategic planning, participants identified specific areas and the better tools to address the shared needs, as food safety, marketing innovation, food safety and food integrity.

Both CETMAR and Matís develop scientific RD research. The Icelandic company focuses on research and development in the area of food and biotechnology and provides consultation worldwide to companies in the food industry, especially in the marine sector. Matís is a governmentally owned, independent research company, founded in 2007 following the merger of three former public research institutes and the biotechnology company Prokaria. Matís is a well-known partner within global food and biotech R&D and has an ongoing fruitful cooperation with many of the largest food and ingredient companies in the world such as PepsiCo, Nestlé and Roquette.
