Antonio García Allut, professor of Social Anthropology from the A Coruña University, gave a talk in the Technological Centre of the Sea (Centro Tecnológico del Mar) regarding governance through the marine reserves in the Galician estuaries. This chat was held within the framework of the SAF-21 project: “Social Sciences Aspects in 21st Century Fisheries. The Socioeconomy Area of CETMAR is participating in this project.
This session pointed out the importance of having flexible and participatory governance systems in which all-leading actors of fishing resources management and marine areas can fit in order to achieve and guarantee sustainability of both.
In his intervention, Professor Allut related the process developed in the last six years for the creation of the marine reserve “Os Miñarzos-Fin de Terra”, that could be a reality in 2016. He also spoke of the role of the fishing sector of the area to achieve this statement that, he remembered, has the majority support from the fishermen guilds, as well as from the public administrations and scientists.
The day ended with a debate between the speaker and the attending public, mainly experts of CETMAR and other scientific institutions and research centres. SAF-21 is an initiative funded by means of the H2020 programme of the European Union, in order to create a framework of research, learning and collaboration among young researchers within the fishing management in the European field.
The project will end in 2018 and until then, the creation of a network of social scientists will be developed for fisheries management in the European Union. The network is aimed for training experts in the analysis of the social behaviour to improve management of complex partner-ecological systems such as fisheries.
Led by the University of Tromsø, in SAF-21, the University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands), MATIS, Mapix Ltd., Syntesa Ltd. (SME) and the Universities of Manchester and Utrecht participate together with the CETMAR Foundation.
